Home Up BEQ General Regulations

7. BEARDS and MOUSTACHES.

a.                                                          Basic guidance.

            (1) The basic guidance is contained in U.S. Navy Uniform Regulations, however, beards which are immature (usually presenting a ragged appearance), interfere with, or are a hazard in performing assigned military duties or training requirements are prohibited. Specifically, this prohibition applies to:

(a)                                                               Recruits,

(b) Personnel assigned damage control/disaster control or other duties requiring the use of tightly fitting face masks.

b. Restrictions.

(1) No arbitrary restrictions (such as loss of liberty) will be placed on individuals desiring to grow beards or moustaches. However, since the growing or growth of a beard will alter the appearance of an individual, and in order to prohibit beards in those cases where military duties are affected, personnel will request permission from their Commanding Officers to grow the beard or moustache. Written approval must be carried by any person whose Armed Forces ID card does not reflect accurately his appearance.
